Who is Arnie...

This year marks my 17th year in Country Radio and my 13th here at COW97. My radio days began as a senior in high school at my hometown radio station WHTL in Whitehall, WI. I am a 2002 graduate of the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, a husband, and a father of one amazing daughter.

We get to be a part of many great things in radio, but the #1 reason I do it is because of the music. I am a country music freak. New…old…twang…no twang…it is the reason I’ve been hanging around country radio for 14 years. I like to think that it’s more than just music. I like the fun songs, but I flip over those with strong lyrics…the kind of songs that grab you by the shirt collar and pull you close to the speaker.

Jamey Johnson’s “In Color”
Eric Church “Sinners Like Me”
Merle Haggard “A Place To Fall Apart”
Waylon Jennings “Along Time Ago”
Vern Gosdin “Do You Believe Me Now”
Jeffrey Steele “Tryin’ To Find It”
Trace Adkins “Don’t Lie”
Tracy Lawrence “ If I Don’t Make It Back”

I’m probably happiest listening to the saddest songs….crazy??….maybe!

I once had a co worker who called me “aloof.” It freaked me out at first. I didn’t know what it meant.

Aloof: at a distance, esp. in feeling or interest, reserved or reticent.
I think she was dead on. I can be very reserved sometimes making people get the wrong impression perhaps. Trust me, most of the building here thinks I am crazy, and they may be right!

I want to say “thank you.” I know there are choices in which station you listen to and the fact that you choose COW97 is just great! Call the COW lines anytime. This is your station and I feel privileged to be a part of your day!

Fun Facts about Arnie...

Favorite COW97 Moment...
Surprising a young kid at Country Fest with meet & greets for Toby Keith. He was a big fan and his dad was gone serving in Iraq at the time. His grandma contacted me ahead of time and I was able to surprise him at his campsite. I could see it meant the world to him and his family.

What did you want to be as a kid?
I can’t really remember. But as a kid, I would play Red Sovine records and pretend I was on the radio.

What cartoon character or superhero would you like to be and why?
Superman. I’d love to show up when some puke is hurting the innocent and put an end to it.

If they were to make a movie about you, who would play you and what would the title be?
Gary Busey. “One Day He Just Snapped”

If you could meet anyone famous, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Hello!...My name is Ben Butler and me and Arnie are helping to start your day off with a bang, every weekday morning from 6-10!

I was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin and spent my childhood growing up in Black River Falls so this truly is home for me.  After graduating from Black River Falls High School, I took some classes in La Crosse before ending up at UW-Eau Claire.

I began my radio career right here at the ripe age of 19.  Over the past 8 years, I have done about every shift there is, morning, noon and afternoon, last coming from the Wausau-Stevens Point area.

I LOVE country music and have a pretty wide array of knowledge in the field.  Feel free to e-mail me at ben@cow97.com or give me and Arnie a call in the studio from 6-10am (888) 269-2699 or add me on Facebook…I’d love to chat!

Who is Mike...

Let’s see….I was born in a manger in Rock County, WI back when Dwight Eisenhower was president. It was dark. On our family farm we raised various crops and occasional livestock. I began driving tractors at the age of five. Hit my first tree at the age of …uh five. Our best crop was rocks. We always picked ‘em in the spring. Those buggers kept coming back. And we were always fencing. Had to make sure that corn we planted didn’t uproot itself and run away.

I barely remember the 70s. Must have been fun, I hope. Have worked in radio since 1979. I’ve been married to Theresa since 1981 and have two great sons, Max and Colin. In fact they turned out a lot better than me. I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I live in a state of insanity, confusion and all-around hallucination.

Like Me!!:

About Me:
I’m the wild bachelor of the COW Crew.  Some days it’s just a challenge not burning my house down cooking.  And I’m still not exactly sure what this iron thing that my mom says I need to get the wrinkles out of my clothes.  I started off my radio career at COW97 in January of 2008 doing middays on the weekend, and filling in whereever else needed. In June of 2008 I moved to southwest Iowa. While in Iowa I worked some odd jobs and worked part time at KJAN in Atlantic, Iowa for about a year. Now I’ve been back at COW97 since February 2012 and am so glad to be back in COW Country.

I grew up on a family farm north of a map dot called Stanton, Iowa. I honestly believe I was 8 or 9 before I realized most people bought milk at the grocery store and didn’t get their meat from a private drawer in the cooler of the local meat locker. I came to the area in 2003 via Fort McCoy on my way to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon my return to the States in 2004, I rented a cabin at Pine View Campground for a week's vacation.  I fell in love with Wisconsin and  my vacation ended up lasting untill 2008 when, due to my mother having health issues, I returned to Iowa; then in 2012  returning to Wisconsin.

I love music in general, but nothing speaks to me quite like country music. There is something about songs that seem like they were written about me and my life and no other genre does that like country.  When I was younger I listened to a lot of  “hair bands”  then in the early 90’s a friend told me about this country song and had me listen to it. The song was Against the Grain by a still relatively new artist from Oklahoma by the name of Garth Brooks. I was hooked.

Favorite Place to Hangout when not working:
On a nice day you will find me out with two fists in the wind,  eating asphalt on my motorcycle.  I also tend to be found in karaoke clubs.

Dirty Little Secret:
I will occasionally listen to pop music.

Favorite Sports Team:
I’m not much of a stick and ball sports guy but I do like watching the Packers. My sport is NASCAR and I’m a fan of the number 88 Hendricks Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Favorite Charity:
Local animal Shelters

What Did you Want to Be as a Kid?:
I wanted to be a Naval Aviator.

What superhero would you want to be and why?:
Batman, because he has the coolest toys. Incidentally, he is the only superhero without superpowers.

If you could meet anyone living or dead who would it be?:
The Intimidator, Dale Earnhardt; just because he seemed like a regular working-class guy.

What is your Weirdest quirk?:
I love repelling and climbing terrain features, but I’m scared of heights.

What is the wallpaper on your cell phone?:
A 3-masted wooden ship under ominous skies.

ANDY THURSTEN--WEEKENDS

Hey there...I am Andy Thursten.  I bring you country music on the weekends.  I am a fully bred Wisconsin boy that does not bleed the Green and Gold, or the Badger Red.  I am sorry, but I do love the Milwaukee Brewers, so 1 out of 3 is not too bad.

SARA ROBERTS--WEEKENDS
About Sara....
I was born in southern Wisconsin a few years back. Lived on a farm for a while as a child then moved up north here to La Crosse. After living there for a while the fam picked up and moved around quite a bit. Had the opportunity to see a lot of the beautiful country we call home. Ended up in Sparta as a teenager and have been here ever since. I am a proud mom of two wonderful(by wonderful I mean masters of driving one insane) boys that keep me quite busy most of the time. They definitely keep me on my toes, that's for sure.
I had the luxury of having parents that were appreciative of all types of music growing up, so i enjoy all of it. Country though is my favorite by far. I lived outside a little town called Branson, MO for a few years and it was life changing for me. had the chance to meet some really wonderful and talented people there and had some of the best times of my life!!
Other than music I enjoy hunting, fishing, hiking, well generally just being outside with my boys teaching them all of the things i have learned over the years. Football is my favorite sport. Born a Packer fan, and always will be!!! This is my first job in radio and absolutely love it!!!!
