5th Annual Mitch Maxey Memorial Golf Tournament
Benefiting Aaron Johnson Family and Children's Miracle Network
On July 27, 2013 the Mitch Maxey Foundation is hosting the 5th Annual Mitch Maxey Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held at Coulee Golf Bowl. The Mitch Maxey Foundation was established in March of 2009, in memory of Mitch with the foundation helping other children and their families. On March 17, 2009, Mitch lost his 5 year battle to brain cancer. The tumors consumed his body, but had no power over his spirit. Although Mitch is no longer with us physically, his spirit thrives in our hearts, memories and the good we do to honor him. During his short life, Mitch remained a positive person who touched and inspired many people along his journey. The strength and determination that he showed during his illness was an encouragement to so many. Now through the Foundation our work will most certainly serve as an inspiration to all of us. Mitch taught us to believe that we must live our lives with the same determination, perseverance and zest that he did to fight his illness.
Since 2009 we have raised over $39,000 from generous sponsorship donations and golfing participation which has directly assisted 12 local children affected by pediatric cancer along with benefiting the Children's Miracle Network.
This year's proceeds will go to Aaron Johnson and CMN. Aaron is a 9 year old from Holmen who was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) on April 30th of this year. AML is rare for kids Aaron's age. The average age for AML patients is 65. Aaron will need a minimum of four rounds of chemo therapy and may potentially need a bone marrow transplant. He will miss the remainder of the school year and possibly part of the next. His summer plans of camping, fishing, and swimming will have to wait until next year. He is active in cub scouts and plays tackle football. He wants to be a cardiac surgeon when he grows up. He constantly impresses his nurses with the things he knows (including 72 digits of the number pi). While the side effects have been challenging, his AML has responded well to treatment. He keeps an amazing attitude. To quote him, "So basically, all of the news has been good - except the leukemia part".
